Cleopatra tells the dramatic life story of Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of Egypt’s Ptolemaic dynasty. She forms a fateful alliance with Julius Caesar, securing her position as queen and bearing him a son. After Caesar’s assassination, Cleopatra aligns with Mark Antony, a powerful Roman general. Their passionate love affair and political partnership challenge the ambitions of Octavian (the future Emperor Augustus), leading to the infamous conflict between Rome and Egypt. As Rome’s forces close in, Cleopatra and Antony’s fortunes decline. Facing inevitable defeat, they each choose death over humiliation. Cleopatra, legendary for her beauty and wit, famously dies by suicide, traditionally said to be from the bite of an asp, ensuring her legend will live on forever.
