Garp’s Final Lesson: Did Aokiji Sacrifice His Mentor for the Future?

In the midst of the Hachinosu Battle, Aokiji confronts Garp, who is engaged in a pivotal effort to distract the Blackbeard Pirates. His goal is to provide Koby and his allies with a crucial opportunity to save those in danger.

A flashback reveals an important lesson from Garp: when faced with a choice to save two out of three—yourself, a baby, and an elderly man—the decision is to save yourself and the baby, emphasizing the greater future potential of the younger.

This lesson resonates with fans as they watch Koby leave Garp behind, opting to prioritize himself and the marines (who represent the “baby” or the lesser threat) in a moment of crucial decision-making. It’s a poignant reflection of Garp’s philosophy taking root in Koby’s character.

However, there’s an interesting perspective to consider: Aokiji, another student of Garp, is present as well.

Aokiji doesn’t attempt to pursue Koby and the others; instead, he engages Garp in combat. Ultimately, he overcomes his former mentor, albeit at the expense of allowing Koby and the marines to escape.

If Aokiji is indeed planning to betray the Blackbeard Pirates, his actions can be interpreted accordingly: he could not afford to avoid the fight as it would expose his true intentions. This leads him to choose to save two enemies from his wrath: Koby and the marines, while confronting Garp instead.

By applying his mentor’s philosophy, he decides to spare Koby and the marines, ultimately defeating the old man.

The chapter is titled “The Final Lesson,” indicating that this moment may serve as Garp’s last teaching to Aokiji. It hints that Aokiji could face a similar sacrifice in the future for someone he believes embodies potential—perhaps Robin.

This interpretation appears more fitting for Aokiji than Koby, as it’s unlikely Koby will find himself in the role of the “old man” who must preserve the future. While Koby may encounter a similar situation, it’s conceivable he will find a way to save everyone—just as he did at Marineford—but this time without sacrificing himself, thereby surpassing Garp’s philosophy.

In a closing note, Garp’s laughter suggests a sense of approval. Aokiji’s choice to go after Garp instead of the future marks a completion of “The Final Lesson,” a lesson that he stumbled over during the Marineford conflict when he nearly took Luffy’s life.

Ultimately, it appears Aokiji’s path hints towards a future sacrifice.
